Gum Disease Treatment

Gum disease is one of the most common oral health conditions. Unfortunately, it is also the most serious if it is not treated in a timely manner. While gingivitis is highly reversible when addressed early, untreated advanced stage gum disease can lead to tooth loss as well as threaten one’s overall health. In fact, gum disease has been linked to stroke, heart disease, diabetes and premature birth. Given the serious nature of gum disease, our office takes a proactive approach to maintaining and restoring gum health.

Dr. Sagunarthy evaluates the condition of your gums during your routine dental exams. If signs of periodontal disease are present, we are proudly equipped to offer a full range of treatment options. For mild to moderate gum disease, treatment can often include more diligent oral hygiene habits at home or a deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) procedure at our office. Dr. Sagunarthy is also qualified to perform more advanced gum disease therapies for those who suffer from periodontitis or more progressive gum symptoms.

Causes and Symptoms of Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease typically begins when excessive bacteria and plaque build-up along the gum line. This causes irritation and infection within these soft tissues. If left to progress, the gum infection will cause the gums to pull away from the tooth roots, forming deep pockets of tissue that harbor further bacteria. In advanced stages, gum disease can cause destruction of the underlying bone, tooth instability and eventually tooth loss. Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in the United States.

It is important to know and recognize the symptoms of gum disease so that we can administer an effective treatment plan as soon as possible. The following early warning signs of gum disease are:

  • Swollen or inflamed gum tissue
  • Red or dark pink gums
  • Tenderness or bleeding when brushing
  • Bad breath
