How to Handle Unplanned Dental Events

A concerned woman with dental issue at a dentist office.

While we can generally predict when you’ll need your next dental cleaning or even a restorative dental treatment, it is nearly impossible to plan for a dental emergency. Dental emergencies involve sudden trauma or pain to your teeth or gums. Unfortunately, these dental concerns always seem to arrive at the most inopportune times. For this reason, it is imperative that you have a trusted dentist that offers emergency dentistry services.

At Carolina Commons Dentistry, we provide emergency dental services in a caring and compassionate environment. We realize that patients are already under enough stress handling sudden tooth pain or an oral injury. Regardless of the type of dental emergency, our staff is equipped to handle it with our expertise in general, restorative and cosmetic dentistry.

Types of Dental Emergencies

One of the most common dental emergencies is a lost filling. From time to time old filings will come out when a person eats something sticky, for instance caramel candy. Depending on the size of the filling this could present an immediate problem, but most times, rinsing with warm water and pressing part of a cotton ball in the resulting cavity will suffice until are able to come into our office.

Another very common problem is loss of a dental crown. If it isn’t swallowed, make sure you bring it to the office with you. Generally, it is just a matter of cleaning the tooth, cleaning out the crown and reseating it.

Toothaches are also common emergencies. By the time the pain reaches the state of an emergency call, chances are you have a rather serious problem on your hands. Our dentists will assess the situation and consult with you regarding the best solution. One of the top priorities in this situation is to get the pain under control so you can function comfortably again.

In the case of a tooth that’s been knocked out, it is imperative that you come in right away. Rinse the tooth in warm water handling it only by the crown, making sure not to touch the root. Transport it in a small container of milk or salt water.

Dental emergencies can leave you feeling flustered and anxious, especially when the aesthetics of your smile are at stake. You can trust Carolina Commons Dentistry to deliver excellent emergency dental care to your entire family.
